QUILTERS KNIT & CROCHET CLUB The Solera Quilters are creating Quilt of Valor quilts for a few worthy former military recipients. We are all pitching in making the blocks that will combine to make a beautiful patriotic quilt that will be presented when it is completed. This picture shows the beginning of one of the quilts, that will be enhanced with further blocks. Our group loves making items for donation to all kinds of worthwhile organizations. Either giving back or paying it forward is something we feel is a part of sharing our craft. Knitting and Crochet members were busy with needles and hooks recently with red, white and blue items for the display case and to celebrate Fourth of July month. Caryl, Olive, Carolyn and Nikki doing the placements. It was fun to do a holiday themed display. On a sad note, our member Marge Shearer lost her health battle and she will remain in our hearts as she always had a smile on her face and donated so many hours to charitable causes. 34 | LIFE IN SOLERA | AUGUST 2023 | Basketry is an ancient art, practiced by many people and cultures. Traditional basket makers used readily available materials, such as sweet grass, pine needles, willow, and thin strips of ash or oak. Our instructor, Marsha Orr, teaches Appalachian style basketry which is a functional form of basketry used for everyday activities. Thus, the basket names often reflect their functions, such as Market Basket, Egg Basket, Herb Drying Basket and others. On July 8, we held our third basket weaving class here at Solera, making a bread basket. Because space is limited for each class and the response was so great for that class, we have scheduled another bread basket weaving class for Sept. 23. We will be making the same basket the folks made on July 8. Because the response was so great, half the class for Sept. 23 is already full. If you are interested in learning to make this basket and would like to attend in September, please call Mary Anne Roadick at (909) 239-6698 for a spot in the class. The class begins at 9 am and is a full day class. We have also scheduled a class for Jan. 13, 2024 to make a door- hanging basket. More details about this basket will be explained as we get closer to that class date, however, if you wish to attend that class, you may give Mary Anne a call and have your name added to the list for the January class. Our instructor, Marsha Orr, began teaching basketry through Fullerton Parks and Recreation's Community classes. She taught there for three years before retiring to Menifee. She says, "I find joy in teaching and practicing this ancient art and seeing the look of discovery and satisfaction as my students crate their own basketry art." Everyone who has taken these basket classes has completely enjoyed the day with fellow residents and comes away with a beautiful basket. BASKET WEAVING
