SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | AUGUST 2023 11 Submitted By Linda Weiss, Resident Another excerpt from my wonderful little book I Could Chew on is, by Francesco Marciuliano. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. By Kathy Caraher, Resident Early June was a wonderful time for the Garden Group to visit Vista, California! It is a quaint town nestled between the I-15 and Highway 76, heading south towards San Diego. It is a wonderful day trip to get away from the soaring heat this summer or fall. e day started with a visit to the Alta Vista Botanical Gardens. We arrived about 10 am so the temperature was quite pleasant. e Gardens are divided into an Upper Garden and Lower Garden (which is a little hillier with steeper pathways). ere are panoramic views, a prehistoric garden, jungle shade area, California natural gardens, medicinal/herbs plants, a pond with turtles, and an event area surrounded by beautiful roses and shade trees. It is a beautiful place to take grandchildren. ere are several places to sit and rest, have a picnic lunch, or just relax and imagine life in the slow lane. Next, it was off to the Yellow Deli. is restaurant and the way of life for its family of 'owners' harkens back to the days of the loving hippie. With a history dating back to 1973 there are now Yellow Deli locations throughout the U.S. and around the world. It was an eye-opener for most of us. ey source the food they serve from their farms and gardens and serve it with care. Several of us ordered the fresh salmon sandwich, sourced from Alaska on their private fishing trip. Our waiter had actually been a part of the fishing crew. e restaurant itself was a step back in time: hand hewn structural wood, macrame, stained glass and artistic creations for seating areas. Aer lunch there are other things to do, places to see or just head back home. You will be wanting to add a new plant to your garden or create a healthy meal reminiscent of the Yellow Deli! A Great Afternoon in Alta Vista I was so worried I was so scared I thought that I had lost you And the life that we both shared I searched through the entire house From the basement to the attic e living, dining, and bedrooms Even the trash cans, because I was frantic Up and down the staircase Back and forth across the halls In and out through every door Louder and louder were my calls I had given up every hope I had given in to despair I had given the bad news to the pet cat Who gave me a look before re-licking her hair But just when all seemed lost, I found you And it gave my heart a rush To see you sitting - startled, but alive and well So, if you don't mind, I'll just stay here until you flush Where Are You?!
