14 SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | AUGUST 2023 By Clare Mendez, Resident e Solera Diamond Valley Book Group chose the books (listed below) to read and discuss to end out the year. All residents, and their friends, are invited to attend our meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at 1:30 pm. e meetings only last about an hour and although the book of the month is the basis for our discussion, we will oen explore other titles, or at least mention other books, that may be of interest to you to read on your own. Anyone wishing to suggest a book to read is encouraged to do so. August – e Guest Book by Sarah Blake September – Rock, Paper, Scissors by Alice Feeney October – Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Gramus Reading a book from cover to cover involves a great deal of time and concentrated effort. In the first 20 pages of the book you'll be introduced to the main characters. You need to remember who the characters are and how they fit into the story and you'll probably have an assumption whether or not they are a good guy or bad guy. Next, your lovely brain will have to keep track of what you learned, suspect what will happen next, and follow the story even aer you put the book down for a few days. at's brain exercise! Even if you don't attend our meetings, I encourage you to keep exercising your brain. By Mary McKernan, Resident 1. Give yourself a facial. Drape a cool towel over your face. Chill your feet in ice water. (Sounds like torture to me) 2. Crush a jigsaw puzzle. (We have plenty in e Lodge cupboards below the TV) 3. Read a gripping thriller. (Yep, check out our library) 4. Facetime or Zoom a long distance friend. (at's a couple of well-spent hours) 5. Map out your next dream trip. (Just dreaming, not actually booking) 6. Experiment with some cold slushy recipes. (Or turn them into ice pops) 7. Tackle a DIY project. (I'll pass) 8. Take a cool bath. (Aaaah, turn up the music) 9. Organize your closet. (Mine's pretty empty already) 10. Watch a movie or TV series from start to finish. (at's called bingeing) 11. Check out e Lodge for air-conditioned activities everyday and all day. Things To Do When It's Outside Hooked on Books Hot
