| OHCC LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2023 | 29 Several German wines enjoy international appeal and are highly regarded by wine enthusiasts and critics worldwide. ese wines are celebrated for their quality, distinctiveness, and ability to pair well with various cuisines. Riesling is the undisputed flagship grape of Germany and has a massive international following. e best German Rieslings offer a unique combination of bright acidity, fruitiness, and mineral notes. ey can range from dry and crisp to rich and lusciously sweet, making them versatile and appealing to different palates. German Pinot Noir, also known as Spätburgunder, has been gaining international recognition for its elegance and finesse. e cooler climate regions of Germany, like Baden and Ahr, are producing outstanding Pinot Noir wines that rival those from other renowned Pinot Noir regions around the world. Sekt is the term used for German sparkling wines. Quality German sparkling wines are produced using the traditional method (Méthode Champenoise) and are increasingly gaining appreciation worldwide. Some German Sekts are made from Riesling and Pinot Blanc grapes, and they offer a unique and refreshing alternative to Champagne. While Silvaner is not as well-known as Riesling, it has garnered a following among wine enthusiasts who appreciate its crisp and refreshing character. Silvaner wines have garnered international attention for their ability to complement various dishes and for their excellent value. Eiswein (Ice Wine) is a rare and unique style of sweet wine made from grapes that have frozen on the vine. ese wines are prized for their concentration of flavors, natural sweetness, and complexity. German Eiswein enjoys international acclaim and is sought aer by wine collectors and connoisseurs. ough not a native German grape variety, Grüner Veltliner is also grown in Germany, particularly in the Franken. is Austrian grape has gained international recognition for its crisp acidity, citrus and white pepper notes, and food-friendly profile. ese wines, among others, showcase the diversity and quality of German winemaking. ey have gained international appeal due to their unique characteristics, excellent balance, and the ability to express the distinct terroir of Germany's various wine regions.
