Woodchucks
You may have noticed Ocean Hills residents
throwing little cloth bags at a wooden Board with
a hole in it, accompanied by lots of yelling and
laughing. Welcome to the 'sport' of Cornhole.
Invented in the 1880s and then called "Parlor
Quoits", Cornhole gained traction 100 years later
in the Chicago area and it spread around the world
from there.
e name, Cornhole, was adopted by players
who used fabric bags filled with dried corn
kernels. As the kernels broke down with use, a
powder emerged through the fabric providing
a lubricant to help the bags slide on the wooden
target surface. Rules can vary, but the general
idea is for individuals or teams (two ,four, or eight
players) to take turns tossing a bag toward the hole
in the Board. Scoring is usually one point for a bag
le on the Board at the end of an 'inning', and three
points for a bag that goes through the hole.
at one-point bag is sometimes called
a "Woody," and a three-point shot may be
accomplished variously by either an Airmail, a
Backdoor, Hooker, Jumper, Swish or a Slick Woody.
ere is more colorful terminology including
a DrainO, Glory Hole, Dirty Rollup, Cowpie or
Cornzizzle.
