For the first time since the pandemic, the Swim & Wellness club held our Swim Clinic during four Saturdays in July. e marine layer lied, and there was plenty of sunshine. We had 15 participants. Some came all four Saturdays and others dropped in for one, two or three lessons. Ken Krueger is our head coach and he worked with the more advanced swimmers, perfecting their stroke, working on stamina and developing a workout program. Robin Ryan worked with beginners, helping fearful folks become more comfortable in the water and learning basic breathing and stroke form. Club VP Sara Stewart stepped in to work with intermediate level swimmers. Anita Simons (club secretary) demonstrated proper body form and breathing along with working side by side with beginners. e Swim Clinic team is very pleased with our turnout, the enthusiasm and the progress of our swimmers. Everyone improved! All beginners are swimming and with some practice they will be able to develop a workout plan. Ken and Robin give private lessons throughout the year. Contact any Board member for more info. Don't miss our next club meeting on urs., Sept. 21 at 1:30 pm on Palm Court. Mike Guillory will share some new findings in neuroscience. e prevailing mindset for years was that we developed brain cells during childhood and older cells were not replaced as they died during the adult years. Modern equipment and testing now prove that we continue to add new stem cells throughout our lives. Mike says that with the right diet, exercise, and sleep we can stimulate our bodies to create more stem cells that will keep our brains alert and active throughout our entire lives. Club member Rosemary Bray has lived in OHCC for three years. She grew up and did all of her schooling in the San Diego area. Her very first home was on Mira Mesa Blvd., which was then a dirt road. Rosemary wanted to be an orthodontist, but she never finished the program and instead became an orthodontic assistant. She recently retired from the industry aer 53 years in the dental profession as an ortho assistant, office manager, and then a dental consultant. She spent 23 years of her career speaking at dental and orthodontic meetings all over the world. Her topic for dental professionals? How to run a more successful practice. Rosemary says that is the one thing that dentists and orthodontists do not learn in school. She has worked in all 50 states and many countries. Rosemary has three children (all with beautiful teeth!) and six grandkids. She has always loved pools and finds swimming very relaxing. She participates in aqua fitness classes twice a week. She had knee replacement surgery six months ago and says that the class, plus rehab, was "a blessing" to her recovery. Rosemary also loves to share the magic of a safari with others. She has taken groups of dental professionals on African safari nine times. She also enjoys giving talks about dental health to various groups and is active in Nubees and Bingo. ~ Sara Stewart, Club VP | OHCC LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2023 | 45 Swim & Wellness Club Rosemary Bray says the pool was "paramount to my recovery aer knee replacement" Each week you have opportunities four times each week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday to exercise your body and keep it fit.
