| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | SEPTEMBER 2023 | 67 The picture at right is an oil painting by Tennis Club member Susan Van Loon. It hangs at the north entrance to the South Clubhouse. The setting for Susan's work was The Lakes Country Club in Palm Desert where Susan and her husband, Steven, lived for a number of years. Steven is included in the work as one of the players on the left side of the net. Susan is well known in our community for her talent as an oil painter. Currently, three of her paintings are featured in the Main Clubhouse. They are titled: Birds, Springtime, and Zebras. Thank you, Susan, for sharing your artistic talent with our Tennis Club and all of Sun Lakes. After what has been a supremely hot summer, the racquet sport enthusiasts of Sun Lakes wish for the early arrival of fall temperatures. September is not likely to be as kind as each of us would wish. September does mark, however, the onset of our fall calendar with four months to finish out our activities and events for the year. That September calendar, as published in our year 2023 Membership Directory, is as follows: Sat., Sept. 2, 8 am - Skills Session / 8:30 am – Mixer (Free) Mon., Sept. 11, 5 pm – Intermediate & Advanced Clinic/ Mixer ($2) Sun., Sept. 17, 5 pm – Quarterly Meeting & Potato Bar Fri. – Sun., Sept. 29 – Mixed Doubles Tournament Phil Hazelton, our very own tennis pro, brings us another helpful Tennis Tip. According to Phil, a server shouldn't start his/her motion until he's sure the court is ready for play. It's okay, however, if he wants to play the point with a stray ball on the court. But his partner can't then generate a new first serve by suddenly deciding the standing ball needs clearing. If the stray ball interruption was stated by your opponent's partner, then hit only offer a second serve. In club play, courtesy might be offered for a first serve. Remember, always, keep your eye on the ball and the fun in your game. Tennis
