NOTE: There will be no Counter Culture Cinema Club screenings in September; we will resume our regular screening schedule in October. The club has screenings on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. We screen films you won't find at the big Cineplexes: documentaries, indie films, foreign films, and other little gems that don't get wide release. All of our screenings are followed by lively discussion about the film; we'd love to have you join us. Show times are Sept. 26 and Oct. 3 at 6 pm in The Lodge Theater. In the New Mexico desert, Police Sgt. Ben Peterson (James Whitmore) and his partner are investigating a series of mysterious deaths. While investigating, Sgt. Peterson finds a young girl (Sandy Descher) who is unable to speak. They soon discover that giant ants are attacking the locals. FBI agent Robert Graham (James Arness) teams up with Ben, and, with the support of Dr. Harold Medford (Edmund Gwenn), and his daughter Dr. Patricia 'Pat' Medford (Joan Weldon) as they destroy the colony of ants in the middle of the desert. Dr. Harold Medford explains that the atomic testing in 1945 developed the dangerous mutant ants. They also discover that two queen ants have flown away to Los Angeles and they are starting a huge colony in the 700 miles of storm drains under LA. A mother reports that her two children have gone missing; the team begin searching for them. Will they arrive in time to save the children and destroy the colony? NOTE: It ends with an epic struggle where the insect hordes are beaten, but they're not conquered because they spawned a generation of films about radioactive creatures. This simple premise produced one of the best science fiction films of the decade — menacing yet completely credible. "Them!" is a landmark movie about giant radiation-mutated ants that gets better with age and boasts remarkable Academy Award®-nominated special effects. You've never seen the likes of THEM!
