30 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | SEPTEMBER 2023 We all know how the Canine Corral works, right? Our dogs get to play with their canine buddies while we catch up with the other pet parents. It's a fun, easy outing that everyone enjoys. But the Canine Corral has some specific — and important — rules. The rules are designed both to ensure good manners and help promote safety. For this reason, it's important to know the proper entrance and exit procedures to the Corral and to follow them every time you and your pooch visit. • Do remove your dog's leash before he/she joins the other dogs to play by using the holding pen at the entrance where you can safely stop and remove your dog's leash. The prohibition of leashes in the park's play areas is designed to reduce aggressive behavior — off- leash dogs are more easily able to use appropriate body language to discourage unwanted interactions or to move away from a dog they deem threatening than dogs restricted by a leash. • Do teach your dog to enter the Canine Corral in a calm orderly manner. Dogs that are wound up and reactive get other dogs worked up, which can in turn make aggressive behavior more likely. Take the time to teach your dog a calm approach. • When leaving the Corral, lead the dog to the gate to enter into the holding area. Once the dog is inside the holding area, you may leash the dog then open the outside gate to leave the Corral. Also, carry your dog's leash with you at all times in case it is quickly needed. If you have a dog, consider joining so they can make friends and run free. The first year is $40 and you must meet shot requirements and a few other things. Pick up an application form at The Lodge front desk; it is so easy. We are always looking for members on our Canine Corral which meets once a month on the first Thursday at 10 am for approximately one hour.
