According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the U.S. is in the midst of an obesity epidemic. It's estimated that obesity affects more than 100 million adults and nearly 15 million children and the annual health care costs associated with obesity tops $147 billion dollars! According to the CDC, obesity is associated with a myriad of adverse health outcomes including: • All-causes of death. • High blood pressure. • High LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, or high levels of triglycerides. • Type 2 diabetes. • Coronary heart disease. • Stroke. • Gallbladder disease. • Osteoarthritis. • Sleep apnea and breathing problems. • Many types of cancer. • Low quality of life. • Mental illness (clinical depression, anxiety, etc.). • Body pain and difficulty with physical functioning. Although excessive body fat is bad for your health, multiple studies have shown that non-fat or very low fat diets do not work and actually increase the risk of obesity. e American Heart Association recommends the Mediterranean diet, which includes generous amounts of "good" fats. Not all fats are created equal; in fact, you may say among fats, there are the "good," the "bad" and the "ugly." Mono-unsaturated fats and poly unsaturated fats are considered the "good" fats because they have beneficial health effects including lowering the risk of heart disease; and decreasing the risk of stroke and dementia. ese "good" fats work by helping your body to remove plaque from your blood vessels and are found in a variety of foods. Saturated fats such as those found in red meat, butter and cheese are considered the "bad" fats because of their negative impact on LDL cholesterol and heart disease. e trans fats are found in processed foods such as baked goods, microwave popcorn and frozen pizza. ese are considered the "ugly" fats because they are strong contributors to obesity, which is associated with the aforementioned list of negative health impacts. Remember not all fats are created equal and a diet rich in "good" fats is essential to a healthy eating plan. e Mediterranean diet which includes fish, chicken, fruits and vegetables along with avocados and olive oil is a heart healthy diet which will ensure that you incorporate the essential "good" fats into your daily eating plan while limiting your intake of the "bad" and the "ugly" fats.
