| LIFE IN SOLERA | SEPTEMBER 2023 | 3 FROM THE BOARD By Cindy Bice The Beaumont-Cherry Valley Water District has many great ideas on how to help all of us use less water. As you may know, Solera is undertaking a huge task of relandscaping the Green Belt area, and hopefully will receive a Grant to help pay for a portion of the cost. While your CALAC committee works on trying to save water for the entire community, please find some ways below that may help you cut back on water usage and save yourself a little money. Water conservation is vital to all of us, in order to remain thriving. BCVWD Conversation tip sheet submitted by Willie Hill. INSIDE YOUR HOME • Wash clothes only with full loads. • Buy a washing machine that adjusts the water level to the size of your load. • Take shorter showers. • Install a low-flow shower head. • Turn off the water when brushing, shampooing or shaving. • Run the dishwasher only when full. • Use the garbage disposal only when necessary. • Thaw frozen food in the refrigerator instead of under running water. • Did you know running your dishwasher and washing machine only when full can save 1,000 gallons of water a month? • Add a few drops of food coloring to your upper tank. Wait 15 minutes (do not flush). If color appears in your toilet bowl, you have a leak. • If your toilet runs after flushing or you wiggle the handle to make it stop, try replacing the flapper valve. if it still runs, replace the flush level bar or the handle. if it still runs after that, you may have a leak. OUTSIDE YOUR HOME • Clean your driveway and sidewalks with a broom instead of a hose. • Use a commercial car wash that recycles water. • Use a bucket of water instead of running water when washing your car at home. • Adjust nozzle direction and reduce overspray to avoid watering sidewalks. • Clear clogs in sprinkler heads for better flow. • Adjust pressure as necessary to encourage proper water distribution. • Use an auto shut-off spray nozzle on your hose. • Water in the early morning or late at night to reduce evaporation. • Turn off sprinklers when it rains, is windy or cloudy. • Use native or drought tolerant plants for landscaping. • Use a layer of organic mulch around plants to reduce evaporation. STOP THE DRIP TIPS: Monitor your water bill! Non-seasonal increases in your bill could indicate a leak. Remember to check your pipes, hoses and indoor appliances for leaks. Easy Ways To Save Water
