| LIFE IN SOLERA | SEPTEMBER 2023 | 7 Landscaping - 6.0 DRC Guidelines Many residents are thinking about re-landscaping their yard. While driving in Solera, you may have noticed many varieties of landscapes. We have added photos in the Life in Solera magazine depicting various landscapes, like those below. There are several things to remember. Read section 6.0 of the DRC Guidelines to assure you are in compliance. One rule we have is 50/50 - 50 percent softscape/50 percent hardscape. Many residents have decided to add rocks. When laying rocks, a weed barrier is a must. Weeds will grow, especially if you don't lay a barrier. A few weeds will eventually grow with a barrier, but they will be manageable. When laying rocks, plants are needed. You have two year growing seasons to show 50 percent is covered in 'green.' Potted plants do not count as part of the 50/50 as they will not spread like plants that are planted in the ground. Another alternative is to install artificial turf. Cost is the big deterrent. Most landscapers who do 'mow and blow' do not install turf. You will need to find a reputable company to install turf. One positive is that you do not have to worry about the 50/50 if you install turf. Some residents have done the 50/50 with a combination of rock and turf. They do not need to add plants. Even with artificial turf, there is maintenance. Weeds will grow along the curb and on the lot line. Dirt eventually collects in these spaces and weeds appear. Also, flowering trees cause headaches for the homeowner. Blossoms, petals, leaves, and other debris can drop/blow on to the turf. Whatever you decide, you need to fill out an application (HIA) from the office with DETAILS (diagram, measurements, types of materials, etc.) of the project.
