36 | OHCC LIVING | OCTOBER 2023 | Village Vets In case you missed it, there was a great article in the Aug. 18 San Diego Tribune, honoring our own Village Veteran, Sid Zimman. Sid, a WWII Marine Gunner who flew over 40 wartime missions, turned 100 years old in August. Sid has been a member of our Veteran's Day Color Guard for the past many years. We hope to see him in uniform again next month at our Veteran's Day Celebration. Navy Captain Dr. Jack Morgan, who served during WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, is another of our long-time Village Vet members. Jack recently started the Jacob R. Morgan M.D. Scholarship Fund for students at California Colleges and Universities, through the non-profit Veteran's Writing Group of San Diego County. e purpose of the group is to share their military experiences and publish their military stories. e scholarships of $500 and $1,000 will be given to veterans enrolled in area colleges. Our speaker for urs., Sept. 28 in Abravanel Hall was Mike Welch, an OHCC resident, with fantastic life experiences. Mike focused his talk on his seven years as a Flight Test Engineer at the Air Force Flight Test Center, Edwards Air Force Base, CA. It was well received by our members. For our avid readers. e Library Association will be hosting a series of authors in the OHCC Clubhouse. In the first of a series, Captain Brett Crozier U.S, Navy (Retired), former Captain of the USS eodore Roosevelt, will be speaking about his book on leadership in today's world entitled Surf When You Can as part of the OHCC Library "Aernoons with Authors" series. Capt. Crozier is coming to OHCC due to a collaboration between the Library and Warwick's Books of La Jolla. He will be appearing on Sun., Nov. 5 at 1 pm. You can sign up at the front desk. Library members are free, and non- members are $5. Board Elections for Village Vet's Club Board members were held during our September meeting. Results will be posted on our next Bugle publication. It's back. Everyone is invited to Abravanel Hall on Nov. 11 at 11 am for our annual Veteran's Day Celebration. It will be hosted by Donna Russell and the RBV High School Band will be there too. You won't want to miss this event. Please note there will be no regularly scheduled Village Vets General meeting in October or November but do remember that everyone is welcomed at the Nov. 11 Veteran's Day Celebration. When you need a new flag or holder, please contact Bob Saint Laurent at (336)- 509-8788. He can help. We only ask for a donation to cover our costs.
