It is hard to believe that summer is over. However, the AACC ended the season in style by sponsoring their annual trip to the Pageant of the Masters in August, attended by 42 community members. The re-creation of classical and contemporary artwork this year reflected a diverse group of artists that represented the richness of various cultures around the world. Everyone in attendance had a wonderful time. We want to thank Johnetta Driscoll and Shairon Nevells for a job well done putting the trip together and providing games and refreshments. As we move through the month of October, it is important to celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day on Oct. 9 and to reflect and honor those who lived here before there was a Beaumont or Riverside County. So who lived here? One group of people that stand out and continue to live in the area are the Cahuilla people. At one point in time, they were called the Cahuilla Nation and their territory encompassed approximately 2,400 square miles in San Bernadino, Riverside, and Imperial counties. The Cahuilla Nation is made up of bands, which are smaller egalitarian groups consisting of 10-50 members. Today, we are familiar with some of their names: Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla, Morongo Band of Mission Indians as well as some smaller bands: the Augustine Band of Coachella and the Cabazon Band in Indio. There are several other bands throughout the inland counties. So, as we recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day, let's also acknowledge the many contributions they made in the foods we eat (turkey, pumpkin, black/navy/ pinto/kidney/cranberry beans, squash varieties, black raspberry, blueberry, cranberry, strawberry, wild rice, pecan, sunflowers, and maple syrup), in land conservation, medicine, kayaks, and protective goggles, just to name a few. The Indigenous People have made and continue to make invaluable contributions to our society, especially in the areas of climate and environmental activism. Save the dates: Our next event is the Jazz Under the Stars, Oct. 7 in the Loggia. Doors will be open at 5 pm. The concert is scheduled for 6:30 to 8:30 pm. The Bistro will create a special menu for the event and additional information TBA. AACC's last event of the year is our Christmas Party, which is Dec. 9; additional information will be forthcoming. The presentation was interesting and the foods were excellent representations of our various types of delicious foods. Our next meeting is Oct. 12 at 6 pm at The Courts. The Steering Committee and Barbara Dipoma are still reviewing options for the meeting. If you have any suggestion for programs for upcoming months, please contact Barbara or me. New ideas are helpful and appreciated. The Italian American Club is open to all residents of Four Seasons. You do not have to be Italian to join our group or to come to our meetings.
