FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | OCTOBER 2023 51 This October marks a very special occasion for the Rainbow Group. We will be celebrating the 10-year anniversary of our group's existence! To celebrate, we will be hosting a potluck celebration on Saturday, Oct. 21. Make sure to plan to join us to share memories, food, and fun with friends, old and new, and learn about the future plans for our group. We are also reviving our LGBT movies schedule, so stay tuned! Please sign up to receive our emails (rainbowgroup@myyahoo.com) and connect with our Facebook group (Four Seasons Beaumont Rainbow Group) to receive more details about our anniversary event and other group activities. We welcome your participation in the Rainbow Group! Beginning with this issue of the Breeze, we are inaugurating a series entitled, "Famous LGBT Americans." We plan to highlight LGBT women and men whose lives and accomplishments have enriched America in a variety of ways. A short biographical summary will appear in the Breeze. For the complete article, please go to the Rainbow Group's Facebook page or request a copy via the Rainbow Group's email address. We have selected Sally Ride as our first person in this series. Born in 1951 in Los Angeles, she attended Stanford University, earning a doctorate degree in physics. When NASA began looking for female astronauts in 1977, she applied and was one of six women chosen. In 1983, she became America's first female astronaut with her participation in the STS-7 space shuttle mission. In 1984, she flew on the space shuttle again. She left NASA in 1987. Subsequently, she pursued a career in teaching physics at the University of California, San Diego. In 2003, she was added to the Astronaut Hall of Fame. At the time of her death in 2012, she had been in a 27-year relationship with a female partner, Tam O'Shaughnessy. Their relationship is recounted by her sister, Bear Ride: "Most people did not know that Sally had a wonderfully loving relationship with Tam O'Shaughnessy for 27 years. Sally never hid her relationship with Tam. They were partners, business partners in Sally Ride Science, they wrote books together, and Sally's very close friends, of course, knew of their love for each other. We consider Tam a member of our family." On Nov. 20, 2013, President Barack Obama awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously to Sally Ride. Accepting the award was Tam O'Shaughnessy. ~ Dan Hazeltine and Frank Galvan Rainbow Group Travel Group Are you ready to embark on exciting travel adventures and explore new horizons? To say that this concert was spectacular is an understatement and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Toward the end of August, the Solos enjoyed a great lunch at Cactus Cantina in Moreno Valley. If you're single and would like to join us, we meet on the first Friday of the month in The Lodge Arts & Crafts Room at 6 pm. For more information, please contact Joyce Olson at (951) 850-3055. ~ Phyllis Noreika
