Solera CERT Cadre At the time of this writing, news headlines are focused on the magnitude 6.8 earthquake in Morocco. It struck at a relatively shallow depth, making it more destructive. Earthquakes of this size in that region are uncommon, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), but not unexpected. I conducted an empirical study on earthquake activity in our region. Most of my data and information came from the USGS and California Institute of Technology (CalTech). Were you aware the Salton Sea Region has seen a jump in activity? Apparently, there is a group of volcanoes along the south tip of the Salton Sea known as the "Salton Buttes" (source: https://www.usgs.gov/volcanoes/salton- buttes). According to the USGS and CalTech, the available data is insufficient to establish a pattern of volcanic activity to determine the likelihood of eruption. The high heat flow from the area and relatively young age of Salton Buttes, however, attest to the potential for future eruptions. (Sound familiar?) What would you do if a quake hit? • If you are in a car, pull over and stop. Set your parking brake. • If you are in bed, turn face down, and cover your head and neck with a pillow. • If you are outdoors, stay outdoors and away from buildings. • If you are inside, stay and do not run outside and avoid doorways. Now what? • There can be serious hazards after an earthquake, such as damage to the building, leaking gas and water lines, or downed power lines. • Expect aftershocks to follow the main shock of an earthquake. Be ready to Drop, Cover, and Hold On if you feel an aftershock. • If you are in a damaged building, go outside and quickly move away from the building. Do not enter damaged buildings. • If you are trapped, send a text or bang on a pipe or wall. Get the attention of others. • Check yourself to see if you are hurt and help others if you have training. Learn how to help until first responders arrive. Join the "\ Solera CERT Cadre! The Solera CERT Cadre holds regular training sessions on disaster preparedness topics on the fourth Friday of each month. The CERT training sessions take place in the Arts & Crafts Room of the Oakmont Clubhouse. Sessions run from 9 to 11 am. This Oct. 27, we will focus on surviving after a quake. All residents and property staff members are welcome to attend the training session. Written by Ray C. Gayton-Jacob, coordinator for the City of Beaumont/County of Riverside CERT program at Solera. https:// www.solera-cert.info ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THE NEXT EARTHQUAKE?
