8 | LIFE IN SOLERA | OCTOBER 2023 | Margarett Rogers, our librarian volunteer, passed away at the end August after a long battle with cancer. Margarett was a Law Librarian by profession and loved working in our Reading Library when she retired and moved to Solera. She recruited other volunteers, including myself, to help keep the library in order. Margarett was full of energy and always had a smile for everyone. Many will miss her. Her library volunteers, some of whom were close friends and neighbors, were shocked to hear the news of her passing because they had talked to her not long before and she seemed to be recovering well. She had called me the Thursday before and said she wasn't feeling well and asked me to cover her days in the library because she had some appointments with her doctors and to "take care of any library issues until I am able to get back." I agreed that I would gladly take care of the library for as long as she needed. And I am happy and proud to take on the responsibility of keeping our small library well organized and current as Margarett would have done. I was an Academic Librarian for 40+ years, recently retired after 14 years as Library Director for the Art Institute campus in San Bernardino. I met Margarett when I donated books from our library when the AI campuses closed. She asked if I wanted to help her in our Solera Library and I accepted. That was three years ago. I enjoyed working with Margarett and sharing some fun librarian stories while helping to keep our small library in order. With the help of volunteers Hildegard Davis, Sarah Tsai, Karina De Leon, and Melinda Peterson (who just started), we promise to do our best to make the Library an important part of our Clubhouse facilities, open to all residents. We welcome suggestions but please keep in mind that we are a reading library not a research library; we have no budget and are dependent on donations, and we have very limited space. What books you donate that don't fit our criteria of age, space, etc. get regifted, not recycled. Some are set aside for Jesse to send to our military and others are picked up by Glenda Clark who takes them to our Beaumont Library for distribution to many locations. You can send comments and suggestions to my email denisewestcott6@gmail.com. I will respond. ~ Denise Westcott, Librarian & Solera Library Volunteer Solera Library SAD NEWS FROM THE SOLERA LIBRARY
