| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | SEPTEMBER 2023 | 9 By Michele Walter, crystalwater@dc.rr.com If you did not have a chance to see the Sept. 5 presentation on the overview and summary of the Highland Fire, please tune in to Channel 97 or go to the Sun Lakes website under Community Awareness and watch the video there. We have received wonderful comments regarding our new stop signs. Several bicyclists have commented that motorists are now stopping at the stop signs. Imagine that! Remember, golf carts do not have the right of way, so please stop at your stop signs. Many vehicles don't see you crossing. Be safe and not sorry! I would like to remind pet owners, please keep your animals on a leash. There have been several complaints from homeowners that some residents are still allowing their dogs to run free on the streets. Again, California State Law prohibits dogs from running at large on any public street, park, or other public areas or upon private property other than that of the dog owner. A dog must be restrained by a leash not exceeding six feet and be in the control of a competent person when off property. If you know of someone not adhering to our policies, please contact Securitas immediately. Securitas will be issuing citations. If they don't know, they can't do anything about it. It is your responsibility to advise them. Protect yourself and others from West Nile Virus. Due to the recent rains and humidity, those nasty mosquitoes are out and about. Who is most at risk of becoming very ill from West Nile virus? People over the age of 60. People with weakened immune systems. People with diabetes, kidney disease, or some other medical conditions. These groups should take extra precautions to avoid mosquito bites. • Prevent mosquito bites – apply insect repellent with EPA-registered active ingredients DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus before you go outside. Be sure to follow label directions. • Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and insect repellent if spending time outside at dawn and dusk. WNV-carrying mosquitoes are most active at those times. • Install door and window screens, and repair any ripped or torn screens to keep mosquitoes out of your home. • Dump and drain standing water around your yard (WNV mosquitoes lay their eggs on standing water). Change water in pet dishes, birdbaths, and wading pools at least once a week. Keep gutters free from debris. Please join us for our next program on Oct. 3 from 1 to 3 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. Supervisor Yxstian Gutierrez invites you to attend an Identity Theft/Scam Workshop. Let us all be informed and stay safe. For more information, please contact Michele Walter (951) 202-8009 or email crystalwater@dc.rr. com. I welcome any suggestions for future programs.
