The next time you're invited to a party, your host may want an RSVP. Maybe even know your ETA. And remind you to come ASAP. If you're running late, get there PDQ. And don't forget to BYOB. On our pickleball courts you meet some well-educated folks. Someone may be a CPA who went to MIT and got a Ph.D. to work at IBM (apologies to Allan Sherman.) You needn't have worked for the AFL-CIO or even the FBI or CIA to know your way around our culture's abbreviated jargon. So it should be no surprise to find our beloved sport has its own. No one is likely to tell you to stay out of the NVZ. But you'll be warned about stepping into the "kitchen" even if the rule book calls it the No Volley Zone. But there is another succinct term that is heard increasingly around the sport: ATP. It signifies a shot that is both fun and effective and should be on our radar (sorry, "Radio Detection And Ranging"). The letters stand for "Around the Post" and is a shot accomplished when your opponent's dink carries cross-court wide and takes you out on the sidelines to return it. If we aren't thinking about this opportunity, we will reach and try to return the ball in the same trajectory it just traveled; or make a desperate attempt to lob it deep. More and more top players are very alert and know that returning the shot low outside the net into the front of the opponent's kitchen or down the alley will often take her off-guard. And yes, it's legal. The key to success when you venture off-court is to stay low. Keep your knees bent and your paddle below those knees while you let the ball drop near the ground before you strike. The YouTube channel contains a wealth of instructional video on our game and there are some terrific segments devoted to just this shot. Lisa Dollard, a top player and director of LevelUp Pickleball Camps recently wrote an encouragement to learn this shot in Pickleball Magazine. If you don't see this informative journal, it is available to those who join the USA Pickleball Association. Dues are low and membership is required to participate in many tournaments. Speaking of membership, our club is booming as new players flock to pickleball. If you are looking to join them, give our club VP, Judy Luna, a call at (949) 929-2390. She will steer you to the best times to give it a try. See you on the courts!
