50 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | NOVEMBER 2023 This is the perspective of the Artist of the Month, Sherry Mounts. "Even though I have painted for 45 years I have never had any formal instruction. I wanted to, but just couldn't work it into my very busy schedule. I promised myself that when I retired, I would take an art class. I was elated to find out that our community had an art class. Soon after moving in, I attended a class. At the first meeting, the instructor, Rob Kelman, told me that he starts all of his students the same way: by drawing three pictures — an elephant, a landscape, and a structure. "DRAWING? Yikes! I don't draw. I have never drawn. Needless to say, my anxiety and fear of failure kept me from joining the class. My inner voice, my harshest critic, was stopping me before I even began. "For the next two-and-a-half years, I peeked through the class windows and read every article in the Breeze about the class. Finally, I decided it was time to take a risk and embrace the challenge. Once again, I walked into the class and this time I became a student. I got past my three drawings and, because I am enjoying it so much, I have even drawn a few more subjects. I also just bought a set of watercolor pencils and I'm determined to master this medium." Classes are Mondays from 10 am to 12 pm and/or Wednesdays from 6 to 8 pm. There is a nominal $5 fee per person, per session. We have learned our new music and in November, we will be putting the finishing touches on our performance. We will be starting off the Holiday Shows on Dec. 1, 2, and 3 in the Ballroom.
