54 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | NOVEMBER 2023 Quilting Enthusiasts Hello! I am writing to you from Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. The leaves are turning yellow and there is a hint of cooler temperatures; fall is officially here. I am here to assist a fellow quilting teacher, teaching layered portraits and I'm also taking a class on collage quilts. As everyone knows, there was a huge fire on Aug. 8 on the island of Maui. Tragically, the entire town of Lahaina burned to the ground. A request from two different quilt shops on Maui sent a request for help: food, clothes, water, toys, baby items, quilts, and gift cards. Quilters are a very special group and help out when we can. Our group here at Four Seasons sent 24 quilts to Maui. I understand that 24 quilts doesn't seem like a lot, but to those who lost absolutely everything it means a new beginning and renewed hope. One of our members has some friends who lost everything. The woman, Kristen, and her young daughter were in California when the fire broke out. Her husband grabbed what he could and ran. The only thing left standing where their home once stood was the hot water heater. Here is the story she provided: "On Aug. 8 my friends Kristen and Andy, residents of Lahaina, lost their home in the fire that spread through Lahaina. When I talked to Kristen, she said the quilt I made them for their wedding was gone along with everything else. I liked the quilt I made them so much, I had made another for myself. I decided to send her my quilt, (I can always make another one for myself ). She also wanted one for the baby small enough to travel but could be put on the ground. I sent her four quilts to use or share with other friends or families." Below is the quilt that Jeri had made for herself and sent to the couple. ~ Mary M.
