I recently returned to my birthplace and hometown in Alabama
for a high school reunion and used it as an opportunity to visit and
re-visit the area's sites. Situated on the lovely Tennessee River, the
area now known as the Quad-Cities, includes the cities of Florence,
Muscle Shoals, Tuscumbia, and Sheffield. Florence is home to the
University of North Alabama; the only Frank Lloyd Wright designed
house in Alabama; and the birthplace of W. C. Handy, credited as
the father of the Blues. Ivy Green, the birthplace of Helen Keller, is
in Tuscumbia. e water pump at right is the place where Helen
learned her first word… "water."
e area is also noted for its rich music traditions. Muscle Shoals
is home of FAME Studios and the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio
(pictured far right), among others. Soul music, such as Percy Sledge's
"When a Man Loves a Woman" was recorded at FAME. A few rock
groups and musicians who have recorded there include: Arthur
Alexander, Paul Anka, Bono, Clarence Carter, Aretha Franklin, Etta
James, Alicia Keys, e Osmonds, Wilson Pickett, Lynyrd Skynyrd,
Candi Staton, and e Rolling Stones. A very interesting free
documentary "Muscle Shoals: e History of FAME Studios/2013"
is available on YouTube.com. ~ Submitted by Norma McGee
