| OHCC LIVING | NOVEMBER 2023 | 15 Village Squares On Sept. 22, eight of our square dancers visited Seacrest Village Retirement Community to demonstrate square dancing to its residents. This was at the request of Carolyn Hollander, a current resident of Seacrest, who was a long-time dancer and past president of the Village Squares. We invited our former, long-time caller, Jim Randall, to call for us. We danced for over an hour, and it was wonderful to dance with Jim calling again. The residents enjoyed the performance, and those of us who went thoroughly enjoyed it also, especially since Carolyn was able to dance with us again. The dancers (pictured below right) are Carolyn Hollander, Steve and Marcia Ward, Ellen Kippel, Kathleen Alexander, Robert Gross,Valerie Thompson, Pete Cannon, Lisa Seamans, and Jim Randall and his wife Lexi. Halloween will have passed, and also our special Halloween party, to which we invited dancers from other surrounding clubs. We always have a wonderful array of food, special punch, and we enjoy dancing with costumed guests from surrounding clubs. The variety and ingenuity of the costumes is amazing! It is always a wonderful night to celebrate with others and just enjoy some good dancing! ~ Written by Valerie ompson Ballroom Dance Our monthly dances are usually held on the second Friday of the month. Join us for our November dance that will be on Fri., Nov. 10 in Abravanel Hall from 7 to 9 pm. The cost will be $5/member or $10/ nonmember. This month, we will dance to recorded music. The club sponsors ballroom dance lessons each week on Wednesdays in Abravanel Hall from 2 to 4 pm. • 2 – 2:45 pm Beginner Class • 2:45 – 3:15 pm Dance Tips and Techniques for both Beginners and Intermediates • 3:15 – 4 pm Intermediate Class The cost for the Beginner or Intermediate class is $10/person per class for both members and nonmembers. Pay at the door (no reservations required, just come). The Dance Tips and Techniques discussion is open at no charge to both Beginner and Intermediate dancers. Carrie Kloss, a champion dancer and professional instructor provides the dance instruction. She has many years of experience providing dance instruction to all levels of dancers from beginners to dance instructors. The dance being taught in November is West Coast Swing (WCS). It is a style of swing dance that is danced to contemporary pop, blues, funk, country western, and R&B music that have slower tempos than East Coast Swing music. WCS is known for its smooth, slotted style, where the dancers move back and forth along a narrow rectangular area on the dance floor referred to as the "slot". One of the greatest parts about WCS is that the dance is highly personalized. There is no "one way" to dance WCS, and dancers are encouraged to develop their own style within the basic framework of the dance. Dancers can vary the timing, footwork, and styling to suit the music being played. The Lesson Review and Open Practice sessions are held in Abravanel Hall from 2:30 to 4:30 pm each week on Mondays. Marvin and Lynn Wheeler, who are very experienced dancers, review Wednesday's lessons and provide help upon request. After the review, you can practice your dancing to a variety of ballroom music. The party is FREE, just drop in. These sessions are open to all OHCC residents and guests of members. The annual membership dues for the Ballroom Dance Club are $10 per person. With this membership, you will receive regular emails describing club activities as well as discounts for dances. To join, just drop your check off at the front desk.
