Woodchucks
The Holidaze are upon us - where did the
year go? Our Club members are well aware of
the countdown to the Annual Woodchuck Toy
Drive on Sat., Nov. 18. The Sawdust Elves have
completed dozens of toys and are toiling away
making more as we speak.
One of the most popular toys is a Doll Cradle
made of solid wood, decorated by our Painting
Elves, then accessorized by members of the
Sewing Club. It's so popular, hundreds have
been made and delivered to Pendleton just in
time for the holidays.
First, a truckload of lumber arrives at the
Woodchucks shop where it is cut into seven
individual pieces that form the cradle. Edges
are sanded, grooves are cut, and then it all takes
the familiar shape with glue and nails. Next,
dozens of cans of paint are applied, then it's off
to the Detail Elves, who use their skills to finely
paint the end pieces. Finally, the Sewing Elves
fabricate heirloom-quality "bedding." The
finished product is then carefully wrapped for
delivery.
This "Production Line" method has been
improved upon every year, and now we are
able to produce dozens (and more) for the
children of the Marines at Camp Pendleton.
Please join us at the Overflow Parking lot on
Sat., Nov. 18 from 9 to 10 am. You may drive
through and drop off new, unwrapped toys and
donations. Our Woodchucks will assist you, so
you don't have to exit your vehicle. Larger toys
(bicycles, etc) may be picked up at your home.
Just contact Tom Murphy or Larry See for
arrangements. Both are listed in the directory.
