| OHCC LIVING | NOVEMBER 2023 | 13 'Welcome sweet November, the season of senses and my favorite month of all.' ~ Josiah Soto When November calls, we answer by wearing our coziest sweater and warmest flannels, always having a cup of hot chocolate in hand. November is the heart of fall, different from September and October. The month leaves the spooky season behind and readies us to welcome the spirits of Thanksgiving. Fear not November's challenge bold We have books And Friends And hearths at never end. Alexander L. Fraser November is a month that recalls many great events. In 1918 on Nov. 11, The Allied forces signed a cease fire agreement bringing World War I to an end. The country had something very special for which to be thankful. That is why we honor our veterans each year on this date. The story behind Thanksgiving started in 1620 when a group of Protestants left their native England and landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts. A native American helped them plant corn and learn to fish. This first winter was very difficult. In 1661, however, food was abundant. They celebrated with a feast that lasted three days. Future relations with the American natives were not always peaceful across the years, but the Thanksgiving holiday became the time to be thankful for all they had been given, thus came the birth of our holiday. The first meal was probably made up of duck, geese, swan, and pigeon. There was corn but no flour, thus no desserts. Men did most of the cooking and serving as so many women had died during the harsh winters. "It looked like the world was covered in a cobbler crust of brown sugar and cinnamon." ~ Sara Allen. So here we are, once again celebrating one of the oldest of holidays in America, thankful for the things we have been given. As the world spins rapidly forward, seemingly out of control at times, we stop, pause, and remember our blessings. One such blessing is to live here in OHCC where we are afforded so many wonderful opportunities, such as the first presentation in a series of "Afternoon with Authors." Captain Brett Crozier will share his book, Surf When You Can, and some inspiring lessons learned from his renowned Naval career.
