48 | OHCC LIVING | NOVEMBER 2023 | Summer went out with a BANG for the Racquet Club. What started with a cornhole game to pass the time while waiting to go on the courts during our monthly pickleball Play & Stay morphed into a month-long tournament. Baggin' N Braggin' drew 12 teams and 48 players, along with dozens of spectators, to compete on Wednesday afternoons during September. Co-chairs Paige James and Darla Haubner served up a variety of "corny" snacks at the end of each evening – from corndogs and corn chips to corn on the cob – before packing up the boards. The one-game grand finale was a spotlight event at Game Day, with the Cornadoes prevailing over the Bodacious Baggers. Bragging rights were earned by Guy James, Paige and Bob James, and Leslie Sommers. Runners-up Darla Haubner, Suzanne Forman, Michael Katz, and Sid Saltzman vowed revenge in 2024. Kudos to John Gildner who designed and built the six custom cornhole board sets with a little help from the Larry See and the James brothers. The Racquet Club hit another home run with Game Day (The Sequel) on Oct. 1. Over 230 members and guests spent Sunday afternoon in the Clubhouse "back yard" playing lawn games, enjoying food truck fare from TK Burgers, and socializing. Donna and Rob Ryan spearheaded this massive undertaking which was months in the planning. Jean and Alan Richmond were their able and creative assistants, creating two widely popular new games – CatchaCan and Target Toss (the latter featuring a custom-designed 24-foot-wide screen where players aimed a variety of balls and pop guns). Bocce, cornhole, and horseshoes also kept people entertained. And while it was just fun to play, so were the prizes – proprietary Racquet Club scratch-offs as well as gift cards from event sponsors American Heroes & Brew and Carlsbad Brewing Company. Thanks, and appreciation to the 89 volunteers who made the afternoon a grand success! Pickleball classes are winding down for the year with the last beginner class taking place during November.
