Party hearty! Over 60 members and spouses enjoyed a pizza party at the Main Clubhouse as ol' time rock 'n roll brought many to the dance floor on the patio the last Saturday of September. The night before had seen the usual Veranda activities moved indoors due to showery weather. Fortunately for our celebrants, the atmosphere at the club's fall gathering was relaxed and allowed leisurely conversation for those who mingled on the lawn. Tony and Pam Browne were the gracious arrangers of the fare. Kudos! Notes from the Courts: The club has established a "Challenge Court" for occasional use. It will be court 8 on the southwest corner of the pavilion. When in use, the idea is simply that a team may hold court, taking on all comers until ousted, whereupon the winning challengers hold the court. The officers have decided to limit the time a team can keep the court to three wins. That team may return to challenge whoever is then on a winning streak. This is supposed to be an informal arrangement — anyone is free to try to beat the current "champs." Court 8 is available for all players if it isn't being used for a challenge. The challengers may pick the side of the court they wish to start on, as sunlight or breeze can make play on either side tougher at different times of day. For this reason, the teams will switch sides when one team reaches six points. This can make the competition a little more fair and is a suggestion teams may wish to use on any occasion. Here is a clarification that may make regular play smoother: When five players are using a court, the side that receives the first serve is designated as the "out" court. The side opposite the first server is the "in" court. This is the accepted way to determine where the fifth player rotates into the game. He or she comes in to the "in" court and the player who just finished play on the "out" court sits. This provides a systematic method for bringing someone into the match and avoids having to discuss who will sit out. Of course, flexibility is always in order as one player may wish to exit early so the rotation is just an option.
