Our newly created Veterans
of Sun Lakes Country Club had
their first meeting on Sept. 15.
We had 14 people in attendance:
five Army, three Navy, two
Marines, and four wives of
Veterans.
The first meeting was basically getting together, meeting each
other, talking about what we'd like to see the group develop into.
Each member indicated they had friends that served, so we can
expect the group to grow. During Activities Day in September, I had
an additional 11 members sign up or show interest in attending our
October meeting.
The group agreed that we want to keep this informal, but it does
need to have structure. At this time there will be no dues. Also, there
are to be no politics in the meetings.
At October's meeting, we had representatives from the DAV, and
Ron who talked about benefits and other issues. Beverly, from our
own community, was there to
help members with benefits.
For future meetings, I plan to
have a representative from the
Riverside National Cemetery
attend, and a representative from
the VFW.
We discussed the Sun Lakes CC Veterans Walk on Veterans Day.
There was some dissatisfaction on how it was done last year, and
members would like to see it improved.
I went over the Honor Flight program and had one Vet take an
application. It's a great program for Veterans to be able to tour the
Memorials in D.C. at no cost. There is a cost to the Veterans Guardian,
and a good percentage of Vets need help getting around.
Our meetings for the rest of the year are Nov. 17 from 10 am to 12
pm in the Bus Room, and Dec. 1 from 1 to 3 pm in the Bus Room. Sadly
starting out so late, getting rooms large enough to accommodate how
many members we'll grow to will be difficult.
