| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | NOVEMBER 2023 | 51 "Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson Beekeeper, Ron Duncan was back in October to reintroduce us to wonderful benefits and the current state of our local honey bee population. Ron provided an in-depth overview of the nature and habits of the honey bee, where and how they are farmed, and their decimation caused by weed control products and other stressors that have contributed to the depopulation of ecologically essential honey bee. For our Nov. 8 meeting at 10 am, the Garden Club has invited all of the Sun Lakes community to attend a special presentation by a spokesperson for the Riverside National Cemetery and Memorial Park. The talk is meant to feature this stunningly beautiful resting place for our country's military veterans and (to some extent) their families. The speaker promises to explain the criteria for interment there and the variety of options available to honor those who have served us in the military. We hope to pique the interest and inform the many veterans in our community. Please note: the agenda — for this meeting only — will present our speaker at the beginning of the meeting and after the break, we will have a brief business meeting. There will be time to sign up for the Holiday Luncheon and guests are also welcome to sign up. Look for any updates on the Garden Club page of the Sun Lakes website, Channel 97, and Good Day Sun Lakes. Our Garden of Eat-em guy, Pat Pennington, said he has already started planting his winter veggies. His Tip-of-the-Month: plant onion and garlic among your veggies to prevent aphids, which are especially fond of the winter veggies, broccoli, and brussel sprouts. Guests are always welcome to attend one of our meetings which are on the second Wednesday of every month at 10 am to 12 noon in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom (unless otherwise announced). Our next meeting is Nov. 8. Dec. 13 is our Holiday Luncheon. Dues to join the Garden Club are only $15 a year.
