ICC Dinner Dance Club Makua Hula Hawaiian Dancers The Makua Hula Hawaiian Dancers wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas! We have truly appreciated your support throughout 2023. Performing for your district social events, within Sun Lakes, and for the Banning/ Beaumont communities has been such a blessing. Once again we look forward to performing for you on Dec. 1 at our annual Tree Lighting event. Your support encourages us to improve our Hawaiian dancing skills. We recently had the pleasure of learning a new dance under the direction of Kumu Carla Kalaalohiikamakaokai Culbertson. To be called a kumu is like a badge of honor because it means you have an important role in the transmission of 'ike Hawai'i- Hawaiian knowledge and culture. Kumu Carla as we affectionately refer to her is culturally rooted in Maui. Her great- grandparents migrated from Puerto Rico. Kumu Carla has danced hula since age five and currently resides in Palm Springs. Her heart is with ancient hula studies from which she graduated in 2012. Kumu Carla is active in sharing aloha through hula and language in community and beyond with a nonprofit organization in the preservation of a native culture. Makua Hula is very fortunate to call Kumu Carla a friend and to have her visit our beautiful Sun Lakes CC community to share her time and talent with us. We look forward to sharing the dance we learned for you in 2024. Anyone interested in learning more about Hawaiian Hula dancing are welcomed to join the Makua Hula Dancers every Wednesday at the North Clubhouse from 10 am to 12 pm. No previous dance experience is necessary. If you are interested in having the Makua Hula dancers perform for your event, or would like more information about our group, contact Perla Williams at (951)467- 8339 or pearlyshellsdancer@gmail.com.
