44 | LIFE IN SOLERA | DECEMBER 2023 | QUILTERS KNIT & CROCHET CLUB This can't be Christmas already! Time flies when you do things you love to do … like quilting! Last month our quilters offered a workshop to learn how to do Paperless Paper Piecing. Say that three times fast. The class was tutored by Penny Wycoff who has taught many classes at local quilt shops. This time it was just for us. With our supplies at the ready we learned how to make these delightful little birdhouses. Put them together and they could make a table runner, wall hanging or even a quilt! If you want to learn this technique, or just how to begin quilting in general, please join us Mondays at noon in the Arts & Crafts Room. Knit and Crochet is busy with crafting items for our entry in the Christmas tree displays at the Clubhouse. We all enjoyed the variety of entries last year, and our members were excited to decorate one of the trees for this year's display. Hope you enjoy the pic of our new member, Janet, and her amazing work of art crocheted Minecraft Afghan that will be a gift for her grandson. We also enjoyed meeting Janet's sister who traveled from the East coast to visit! Merry Christmas, Solera, May the holidays be happy and healthy ones for you and your loved ones. And special wishes for our Rafea who we will hope will be back knitting with us soon. Contact Caryl Kay at (941) 524-0342 for info on our group. Basketry is an ancient art, practiced by many people and cultures. Traditional basket makers used readily available materials, such as sweet grass, pine needles, willow, and thin strips of ash or oak. Our instructor, Marsha Orr, teaches Appalachian style basketry which is a functional form of basketry used for everyday activities. Thus, the basket names often reflect their functions, such as Market Basket, Egg Basket, Herb Drying Basket and others. On Sept. 23 we held our fourth basket weaving class here at Solera making a bread basket. Our next class is scheduled for Jan. 13, 2024 to make a door/wall hanging basket. More details about this basket will be explained as we get closer to that class date. The January class is full but we have scheduled another class to make the same door/wall hanging basket on March 2. If you are interested in joining this class, please give Mary Anne Roadick a call at (909) 239-6698. Our instructor, Marsha Orr, began teaching basketry through Fullerton Parks and Recreation's Community classes. She taught there for three years before retiring to Menifee. She says, "I find joy in teaching and practicing this ancient art and seeing the look of discovery and satisfaction as my students crate their own basketry art." Everyone who has taken these basket classes has completely enjoyed the day with fellow residents and comes away with a beautiful basket.
