| Four Seasons Hemet Herald | DECEMBER 2023 | 9 As the seasons change, we think about those things that need to be checked on periodically. For example, in the fall, we should replace batteries in our smoke alarms. Another recommendation is to conduct a quick check on your home sprinkler. Here is one way to accomplish this. 1. Know when your watering system starts and ends. You will need to check your yard aer a watering cycle to identify a problem. Consider adjusting your water schedule so that you are able to go outside and actually see the water runoff. 2. Look at the street gutter in front of your home. Any excess water will flow into the gutter directly or through the drains running from your backyard to the gutter. It should be obvious where the excess water is flowing from if the cycle is just ending. 3. If there is water flowing into the gutter, consider any of these possible solutions: • Reduce watering time • Split watering time across morning and evening to allow the ground to absorb the water it needs • Change the sprinkler head to a type that better covers the targeted plants without spraying where it isn't needed Performing this simple check will not only save you money, but it will allow the local potable water supply to be used how it is intended, to support the life of animals and plants. Another fall recommendation is to fertilize your shrubs and trees. Doing so, you will be preparing your plants for winter dormancy and strengthening roots for added protection from the cold. Local experts say that late fall is the best time to fertilize here in Riverside County. Broadcasting a slow release, balanced fertilizer such as 9-9-9 is suggested. A balanced fertilizer is one where the three numbers representing nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium are about the same. Of course, to know exactly what your soil needs requires a soil test. ese kits are easily obtained at local garden centers. One last seasonal thought, we on the Landscape Committee wish all our community a safe and peaceful holiday season! Landscape Committee Facilities Committee Many of the residents of the Four Seasons may not be aware of the scope of the responsibilities of your Facilities Committee.
