40 | OHCC LIVING | DECEMBER 2023 | Woodchucks e recent Donation Drive-thru Toy Drive was a great display of the generosity of the residents of OHCC. e Woodchucks Team as well as the Garden Club, Sewing Club, Veterans Club, and the Chorale Group have once again demonstrated the joy of giving to the children of Camp Pendleton Marines and their families. In addition to your generous cash donations and gi cards, many banquet tables at this year's annual Flea Market were overflowing with donated toys and heirloom-quality handmade Christmas stockings; not to mention the hundreds of hand-built toys from the Woodchucks Workshop. Aer this flurry of activity in the woodshop, now it's our season for re-stocking and re-organizing at the end of the year. For all OHCC Residents who enjoy (or might enjoy) working with wood, our shop is well-equipped and available whenever you are ready to join us. e tools are yours to use for your own personal projects, Honey-Do lists, or for giving back to the Community. Not all Woodchucks are wood-workers. Many of you residents just like to support our goals. If you are not yet a member, consider supporting us by joining the Woodchucks. We make it easy: just see us at our table at Do Dues Day on Sat., Jan. 13. If you can't make that date, you can join anytime by asking at the Clubhouse Desk. ~ Written by: Suzi See Garden Club Welcome to December-cooler weather, darker days and brighter holiday cheer! e year may be winding down, but the pace of the OHCC Garden Club hasn't slowed. Our Annual Holiday Luncheon will be Wed., Dec. 13 in Abravanel Hall, with a delicious lunch from the Village Pie Shoppe and entertainment from Amy Lynn Kanner of Magical Harps. is is always a special way to spend some quality time with friends during the busy holidays. As we gear up for the new year, our Jan. 11 speaker will be Shital Parikh, Master Gardener from the San Diego Gardeners Association. e topic will be Bokashi composting (kitchen waste), which is perfect for OHCC residents as we get ready for the new requirement to separate kitchen waste from trash, starting in 2024. Composting is a process by which gardeners leave food waste to breakdown into nutritious organic matter, which they add to their soil to feed their plants. ere are a wide variety of composting systems from traditional composting to vermicomposting - but one that has risen in popularity is bokashi composting. A good thing to learn about for the new changes to our recycling program. As always, our meeting will be in Abravanel Hall, social time and refreshments at 9:30 am and the meeting begins at 10:00 am. e OHCC Garden Club always has a full calendar, with more events planned for next year, if you would like to be part of the fun, join us on Do Dues Day, Jan. 13.
