16 SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | NOVEMBER 2023
Just
One
Day
By Clare Mendez, Resident
My sister and her husband, visiting from Pennsylvania, were
here in Hemet for just one day. With such a limited time to explore
the area my brother, Tom, took them sightseeing. e car ride
began by going east on Route 74, AKA Florida Ave, up to Idyllwild.
e winding drive up a two-lane road (one lane up and one down)
is very scenic. It provides an amazing view of a rocky hillside
making way for pine trees up ahead. ey went from desert to
mountain and back down to the other side of Idyllwild to Palm
Springs on Route 243, past Pine Cove and back to the desert again
in Banning. e scenic route continues to amaze visitors when
you are driving past the 2,700 turbines gracing the landscape
between Cabazon and Palm Springs.
In Palm Springs they enjoyed an incredible sandwich at
Sherman's Deli. Sherman's really knows how to stack a corn beef
or roast beef sandwich until it is almost toppling over. Aer a
study of the sandwich you'll need to figure out how to wrap your
mouth around it. ere's usually enough for two meals or two
people.
Heading up Tramway Road, they boarded and rode the Aerial
Tramway — the world's largest rotating tram car — taking in the
breathtaking views of Chino Canyon before reaching the summit
of Mt. San Jacinto State Park where the elevation is 8,516 feet up.
Aer a little exploring and picture taking, they headed back down.
Next it was time to head home and relax a bit before heading
over to the Lodge to watch Anthony the Magic. We secured seats
in the front row and had a delightful time watching the trickery up
close. Next a night cap at a friend's house where we made plans for
the rest of the week.
