| Four Seasons Hemet Herald | JANUARY 2024 | 15 As we leap into 2024, let us not forget what this new year may mean for some. Oen referred to as Sadie Hawkins' Day, this romantic tradition of "she asks him" originated in 5th century Ireland when St. Brigid of Kildare bitterly complained to St. Patrick that women had to wait too long for men to propose, St. Patrick decreed the women could propose on this one day in February during the leap year. e tradition was then taken to Scotland by Irish monks. Back in 1288, the Scots passed a law that allowed a woman to propose marriage to a man of their dreams in a leap year, with the law also stating that any man who declined the proposal on this day would have to pay a fine. e law was allegedly passed by an unmarried Queen Margaret, who was five years old at the time. She also put in place a rule that all those women proposing must wear a red petticoat while doing so. If declined, the fine to be paid could range from a kiss to payment for a silk dress or a pair of gloves. Legend has it that St. Patrick declined St. Brigid's proposal of marriage, soening the blow with a kiss on the cheek and a silk gown. All's well that ends well… Blooming where we are planted, our Late Bloomers know a thing or two about love. e love of beautiful blooms, the heavenly scent of all thing nature, and the appreciation of quiet moments spent in one's garden. You will oen hear 'therapeutic is synonymous with weeding'! We love it all! Enjoy the photos above of our wonderful Jam Session/Potluck held in November. It was a packed house, and everyone got in on the fun. We look forward to what new adventures await us in 2024 as we plan the year ahead. All Four Seasons residents are welcome to attend meetings and trips. Sharing gardening tips, traveling together, learning from each other, and cultivating forever friendships are the blooms growing in our gardens. Late Bloomers meets every second Monday of the month at 1 pm, usually followed by an excursion planned later in the month. January's meeting will be held on the 8th at 1 pm in the Arts & Cras Room.
