It's Mah Jongg time, a game enjoyed by a group of fun-loving, energetic Colony ladies. Mah Jongg is a tile-based game developed in 19th century China. It was originally called "Maque" in Chinese, which means "sparrow," because the clacking of tiles during shuffling resembles the chattering of sparrows. Colony Mah Jongg actually started in the mid-90s. As interest grew, so did the groups. You can find Mah Jongg games taking place almost any day of the week here. e ladies say it is a great way to meet new friends, get to know others better, exercise their brains, and escape for a few hours from the worries of life. If you hear a clattering of "sparrows" around the Clubhouse, you can rest assured it's a Mah Jongg group! I've been playing Mah Jongg with a fabulous group of ladies for a little over a year now. I still find myself learning new strategies, laughing when I realize someone else is collecting the same tiles I am, getting excited when I draw a wild Joker, and thrilled when I can shout 'MAH JONGG' aer pulling a winning tile! Celebrating with this lovely group of ladies at our holiday party in early December was a perfect way to end the year. Fantastic food, fun games, great raffle prizes, and some rousing rounds of Mah Jongg made it a wonderful evening. I certainly have found new friendships that continue to grow amid the rhythmic clacking of the gorgeous tiles painted with flowers and dragons, jokers and winds, cracks, bams and dots!
