| OHCC LIVING | JANUARY 2024 | 13 January Arrives! Sparkling Winter Sunshine Faces all aglow, Making resolutions, and angels in the snow. Steaming cups of cocoa, A year that's fresh and new, All of this is magic…… Unfolding just for you. is is the month of new beginnings, the month of optimism. Anything feels possible. We set new resolutions and believe we will actually achieve them! Hope is on our side. Robert Frimtzis, a former resident of OHCC, and author of From Tajikistan to the Moon exemplifies the true meaning of hope. It was an ordinary day. I was on a walk with my Golden Retriever, Babs, when I saw a lady sorting things in her garage. A simple hello, an obvious invitation to chat followed. She was an artist, and I was fascinated by her many watercolors displayed among her belongings. ere were chats about the artistic drive from within the soul that never diminishes with age. I spoke of theatre, and writing, and she of her Russian husband, whom she had married in 1957 while both were seeking degrees in engineering. He was one of last survivors to have lived through the horrific events of WW. Widowed in 2022, her memories of his stories of war, anti- Semitism, survival and perseverance poured forth. She spoke of his book, From Tajikistan to the Moon. I knew immediately that I must find the book and write about it. Off to our library to discover that there it was among the Resident Author's books. From his home in the mountains of Tajikista, the author reveals the history and struggles of a young boy of 10 as he runs to survive, dodging bombs and bullets from German guns, and foraging for food to stay alive. He learned the terror of bombings, the torment of the hunted, and the constant awareness of death, the strength of hope. Following his escape from the Soviet Union, he was selected to attend school in Geneva. Later in America, without finishing high school, he earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at City College of New York and a Masters from Columbia University. He later became project manager for the simulator that trained Neil Armstrong and other astronauts for the lunar landings. Robert Frimtzis later wrote, "Neil Armstrong walked on the moon and America was safe during the Cold War, in part, because I survived the WW II Nazi blitzkrieg, imminent starvation, and crossed every border in life I encountered." at is why he remains a hero today. His book is truly amazing. A must read. 5 STARS! Do Dues Day, Jan. 13, 10 am to 2 pm. Join the Library Club; your membership includes all guest speaker programs and access to all books.
