32 | OHCC LIVING | JANUARY 2024 | When I was growing up, hardly anyone around had a camera. My Dad got a nice 35mm camera which he used on vacation and special occasions, having the photos developed as slides. I still have the slides! e ones labeled "Kodachrome" are still good. But Dad loved taking candid shots, and the camera had no automatic setting and required you to set the f-stop and shutter speed, and it mattered what kind of film you were using, and he didn't always keep up with that stuff. As a result, we have a lot of candid shots that are out of focus and otherwise ruined. But in those days, you didn't throw away photos because they weren't perfect or because the photo was of the back of someone's head. Today, things are different. Here are some specific genres where candid photography shines: • Portrait photography – candid portraits offer authenticity over posed shots. While working with your subject, encourage them to act naturally or engage in activities, discreetly photographing them as they do so. • Event photography – occasions such as weddings or other events present many possibilities, from capturing the bride getting ready to the groom nervously fixing his tie (do grooms wear ties anymore?). Candid shots at such occasions can be stress-free because it's normal to have pictures taken at an event. • Street photography – almost all street photography relies on candid shots taken without the subject's consent. e photographer tries to remain unnoticed. Note that it is legal to take photos in the USA in public places, but other countries have different rules and customs. My Nikon makes an audible click, plus it's huge, so not ideal for street photography. But I have an iPhone, which can turn off the click and be very sneaky. • Travel photography – travel candid photos can resemble street photography in highlighting people, clothing, architecture and anything else making the location distinctive. Candid photography with consent is widely accepted and legal almost everywhere. is means that if you're in an area where shooting without consent is prohibited, you can still capture some fantastic candid shots by simply asking for permission first. Once your subject agrees, you can take photos as they naturally go about their activities. ~ Written by: Jim McDonough Photography ere will be a beginners-Stained Glass class starting Jan. 4, 2024. e class will be every ursday for six weeks, from 10 am to 12:30 pm.
