| OHCC LIVING | JANUARY 2024 | 47 We're the club that prioritizes having fun. We'll get you out of the house, into the fresh air, laughing and socializing – whether you consider yourself an "athlete" or not. We've certainly got lots of talented, competitive players here at OHCC, but what we do particularly well is to provide year-round playing opportunities for those of all sizes, shapes, and skill levels. Along with that are complementary social events throughout the year that build on the camaraderie found at the courts. Pickleball is unquestionably the main attraction, but the Club is intent on ensuring that the other racquet sports in our portfolio – tennis, paddle tennis, and badminton – are accessible to all. Tennis mixers will start up in the first quarter to bring together players looking for games, and while the experiment with tennis drop-in didn't pan out, the tennis committee is committed to engaging those who play – and finding more of them! We definitely see an opportunity to expand the number of paddle tennis players in 2024 with former USPTA pro Bill McGrath offering a Paddle Tennis Open House on Fri., Jan. 19 from 1 to 2 pm at the HOA courts. Played on a smaller court, it's easier on the body and lots more social. Contact our Help Desk for the details. Badminton is a seasonal sport, but participation has waned the past few years. ere's a small group playing regularly now and we'll continue our efforts to sustain badminton at OHCC. Let us know if you're interested. What about pickleball? ere are daily morning drop-ins by skill level plus reservation play seven days a week. We'll be organizing round robins throughout the year as a way of injecting a little more competition into play, and of course we'll host three "big event" doubles tournaments and a dinking competition. Also, planning is underway for a more robust pickleball instruction program to roll out in 2024. Cornhole has become part of what we do to have fun off the courts. Between the September cornhole competition and Pickleball Play & Stay Satudays featuring bean bag tossing on the side, there will be additional regularly scheduled playing times. Under the leadership of President Bob James, it's an accepted fact that no club does "Special Events" better than the Racquet Club. You won't want to miss what's in store for May, July, and October.
