We meet each month on the first Monday from 1 to 3 pm in the Main Clubhouse Bus Room and the third Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 pm in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room. Contact Thomas May for further information at (951) 743-2127 or email thomasmay0922@gmail.com. Are you interested in writing poetry? There are many different kinds of poems, such as the plays of William Shakespeare, epic poems a la "Hiawatha" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, song lyrics, or the free verse of e.e. cummings. Each style has its own rhyme, scheme and rhythm. Here is one example, taken from "Trees" by Joyce Kilmer: I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree A tree whose hungry mouth is prest Against the earth's sweet flowing breast Each line has a pattern consisting of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable repeated four times (iambic tetrameter). The first two lines rhyme with each other, as do the last two lines (an aabb rhyme pattern). These are basic building blocks for poetry, with variations depending on your chosen poetic genre. Our Creative Writers Club has had some accomplished poets and others whose forte was prose, both fiction and nonfiction. Come join us at Creative Writing Club meetings to share your ideas in a friendly setting, and listen to the writings and opinions of others. You will find this very stimulating. | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JANUARY 2024 | 37 At our last meeting in October, our artist guest for the day was watercolor artist, Suni Godbold. What an amazing learning experience! She really brought out all the tools to create an image of petals and feathers — tools we all have right at our fingertips, like spoons, beads, and string. She is such a colorful character herself, making this class a true experience. October Mini Art show winners: in Third Place, Sue Langford who created a magical forest with what can only be a mesmerizing waterfall. It's all in the eye of the beholder. Second place went to Don Foster who did a scenery of the mountains. I would like to believe he was inspired by a peaceful place in France. First place was awarded to Betty Jo Ford who created a mixed media creation of an English cottage, like those found in St. Keverne, south of London. The Honorable Mention was given to Patti Rogers who brought a captivating expressive piece of art which really demonstrates a free style of pastels. As the year comes to an end, I see this as an opportunity to invite each and everyone in this Sun Lakes community to come visit what our Art League is all about. Remember the last time you were at the Main Clubhouse and admired the art in the display cabinets? Did you ever wonder or think to yourself that you had a piece of art you created years ago? It could be in that display. Yes, we all want to see your creation. Trust and believe, you are your hardest critic. But allow us to view it, enjoy it, ponder it. Art is something we create to share. So become a member and bring us your creations. Our next meeting on Jan. 14 at 2 pm in the South Clubhouse will feature Joe Oakes who was with us a while back. The last meeting was full, so arrive early. Bring a pen and paper, because his acrylic demo and tips and tricks are extensive. For more information, contact Linda Grabler at (951) 758-3142. Joe's acrylic classes will be Mondays, Jan. 15, 22, and 29 from 9 am to 12 pm. The Art League membership drive has commenced for 2024. Please send checks to Helen Searcy at 5152 Rio Bravo Drive. We wish a happy new year to one and all. ~ Claudia Ellis Art League Creative Writers Computer Club Our next meeting will be Jan. 11 at 1 pm in the Multipurpose Room.
