The 3-3-3 Rule for RV Travel: The 3-3-3 rule
for RVing means you limit your travel to 300
miles a day, check into your campground at 3
pm and camp no less than three days.
The 2-2-2 rule lowers everything to 200 miles,
2 pm. Check-in and two-day stay.
"Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a
tale of a funny trip…." On my 3-3-3 holiday
adventure while towing Lucille (trailer) I set
out for our annual Thanksgiving gathering with
friends and family to beautiful Paso Robles.
The plan - a 300-mile trip and check-in at 3
pm. I thought to take the short route through
5 freeway up Grapevine. "Oops" - I didn't check
holiday traffic report ahead of time which put
me in a two-hour delay. No big deal; I told
myself to just smile and listen to good XM
music.
5 pm comes and I'm approximately 30 miles to the campsite when
I realize the Texaco gas station is the famous James Dean landmark,
very cool. Well, let's keep going down the road and, wait, shoot, oh
no, why did my truck just stop? I'm 20 miles to my destination and
realize I'VE RUN OUT OF GAS! It's dark out, cars and trucks zooming
by but I'm safe alongside the road with Lucille and my puppy. Well,
at least I have a bathroom and food in there.
Time to call AAA.
FOUR hours later and late into the night,
a tow-truck driver arrives and helps me
out with three gallons of gas. Gosh, was I
happy to see him! I was told that since I was
between counties, AAA could not figure out
who covered that area off Hwy 46. I had to
use my iPhone compass to provide dispatch
exact geographic coordinates. Aggravating
matters even more, four hours of using
truck and RV flashers, my truck battery
went dead. So, folks, the 3-3-3 (dummy)
rule applied — traffic, gas, dead battery.
Finally made it safely to destination and
the kind tow truck driver followed me to my
campsite.
Sun Outdoors RV Resort was a great safe
place to meet up with others and relax for three whole nights. (Sun
Outdoors also offers lodging for those who do not have RVs.)
I'm writing this hoping you'll chuckle and realize the best thing
about being on a road trip are the funny stories you'll share later.
