| OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2024 | 29 Art Lovers What is art? The term "art" is related to the Latin word "ars", meaning art, skill or craft. The first known use of the word comes from 13th century manuscripts. However, the word art and its many variants have probably existed since the founding of Rome. As Art Lovers Club members we seek to learn about all forms of art. Art is all around us from the way we decorate our homes, to Michelangelo's sculpture of David which glorifies the human body with all its muscles, veins, and hair in magnificent detail. Much of the art we see in museums and galleries is pleasing and thrilling to look at while other works are upsetting or difficult to understand like dribbled paint on a huge canvas. The Oceanside Museum of Art's exhibit of "Art for the People" depicted scenes from the Great Depression that were stark, and emotional depicting the hardships, struggles and hopelessness of that era. At the San Diego Museum of Art, we explored the similarities of the sensual paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe's flowers and bones to the curves of the human body sculpted in bronze by Thomas Moore. We learned about "Pop Art" from collectors Jacquie and David Ettinger and at the Fallbrook Art Center viewed 100 water media paintings from distinguished painters from all around the U.S. The art of the couture was displayed at the Bowers Museum with magical and fantastic gowns by China's "Queen of Couture", Guo Pei. The artist employs ostrich feathers, jewels, intricate embroidery, tulle, sequins even small pieces of plastic to create her exotic gowns. Artist Kathleen Scoggin showed us how to create a stunning abstract watercolor painting by tilting the textured watercolor paper and adding complementary colors and shapes using large brushes, chalk, ink, and torn paper. After we toured "Beyond King Tut," the immersive experience at the Del Mar Fairground Susan and Ernie Pick delighted us with "An Evening in Egypt." The couple gave an interesting and entertaining slide show of their visits to ancient art and cultural sites of Egypt. Consider joining the Art Lovers Club if learning about art in its many forms appeals to you. Dues are $12 per year. Make your check payable to OH Art Lovers Club and deliver to front desk of the Clubhouse. Please include your email address so we can contact you.
