FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | FEBRUARY 2024 51 Thank you to all who contributed to the Rainbow Group's fundraising campaign for The Trevor Project, which provides suicide prevention for LGBTQ young people. We are very grateful for the generosity you demonstrated. We will be hosting our next potluck on Saturday, Feb. 10. This will include another stimulating and fun game presented by Gail and Micki. Information is available on our Facebook page or via our email (rainbowgroup@myyahoo.com). This month our selection for the famous LGBT Americans series is labor leader, Mary Kay Henry, a lesbian, who in 2010 became the first woman elected as the President of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) headquartered in Washington, D.C. SEIU, founded in 1921, presently has two million members, with most of them located in metropolitan areas. New York (300,000), Los Angeles (205,000), and Chicago (90,000) are the largest. More than half of the members work for federal, state or local governments. Other major job occupations represented by SEIU are hospital systems, property services and security, and long-term care. Of particular interest is the fact that fewer than two percent of SEIU labor agreements ever involve a strike. Under Henry's leadership, SEIU has won major victories that resulted in the improvement of the lives of health care, property services, and public sector workers. Her decision to back fast-food workers and other service and care workers in the "Fight for $15 and a Union" campaign has helped 24 million workers in the U.S. win wage increases. Fast Company magazine named her one of the 100 most creative leaders in the economy. In addition, Politico magazine named her one of the top 50 visionaries reshaping American politics. Henry was born in 1958 in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan, to a family of 10 children. She graduated from Michigan State University in 1979 with a degree in labor and industrial relations and a second degree in urban policy and planning. In 1980, she decided to work for a union that was involved in health care organizing and subsequently joined SEIU. From there, she has held many positions within SEIU with increased levels of responsibility, rising eventually to the level of President of SEIU. Henry is married to Paula Macchello, and they share a home together in San Francisco.
