Do you remember Momma telling you to "stay out of the kitchen?" What about, "if you can't handle the heat, stay out of the kitchen?" ose same childhood rules apply to Pickleball. In Pickleball, the kitchen means the non-volley zone of the court. Like so many sports with strange terminology, Pickleball is no exception. And like all rules, once you learn them, they are easy to follow. is month, we are spotlighting two Paddlers: Martha Hubbs and Cindy Starling. Read how they are having fun and managing the Kitchen. When did you start playing Pickleball at Solera? MH: I started playing around September 2023 CS: Aer retirement, I wanted to get out and exercise. I met Sue Miller and she encouraged me to come out one morning in April 2023. at day, Richard Chabolla introduced himself and showed me basic rules. I've been hooked since! What inspired you to play pickleball? MH: I moved here in July 2022. Once I finished my home projects, I decided to play. I had no idea what pickleball was or how to play. I love learning and challenging myself in everything I do. CS: I am not a highly sociable person, and it took me awhile to meet new people. Once I started playing, the Paddlers made it easy to overcome any hesitation and inspired me to continue playing! What advice would you give to a new Pickleball player? MH: Come out and play! I warn you, it is addicting, and you will want to play all the time. Pickleball is great for your brain, health, and well being. CS: Anyone curious about Pickleball, should come out and play! It's fun and entertaining, especially in the wind as the balls seem to get blown in all directions. How long did it take to understand the "Kitchen Rules?" MH: It didn't take long to understand the kitchen rules especially with the help of great Paddlers. CS: It took me a while to understand the "kitchen rules." But not as long as the Server Rules! ose took a bit longer to grasp. You start the game, 0-0-"and I am a 2", and next time around… "I'm a 1"! Do you have a favorite shot? MH: I love to dink and serve short. LOL! CS: LOL! For me, my favorite shot is anything I hit over the net! How would you describe the Pickleball Paddlers? MH: Love my Paddlers! ey are great and make you feel like family. CS: ey are wonderful people and I've made new friendships. We love new players!
