4 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | FEBRUARY 2024 | By Beverly Simmons, Master Board 2nd Vice-President DID DID YOU YOU KNOW??? KNOW??? Did You Know the Sun Lakes Country Club investment policy is directly guided by the Davis-Sterling Act? Davis-Sterling states prudent investments of monies should focus on the following parameters in their order of importance: 1. Safety; 2. Liquidity; and 3. Yield. Davis-Sterling also limits the type of investments that an HOA may pursue. With safety the number-one factor, investments into stocks, bonds, hedge funds, cryptocurrency, and other high-risk opportunities are not recommended. The SLCC Investment Policy, established in 2014, follows these standards which apply to all monetary assets of Sun Lakes HOA. The primary objective is to: 1. Preserve the SLCC HOA's investment funds principle; 2. Maintain a level of liquidity appropriate for the economic environment; and finally, 3. Earn a total rate of return greater than that provided by a portfolio completely invested in money-market accounts or short-term (less than 12 months) Certificates of Deposit. Sun Lakes follows these guidelines and invests in the following: • Interest-bearing, money-market accounts • Certificates of deposit fully insured by the FDIC United States Treasury • Fixed rate bills, notes and bonds The strategy further states, to the extent feasible, maturities of all investments should be one to five years and in the case of anticipated early redemption, Treasury Bonds and Notes of the same one to five year duration shall be used because of the market liquidity. Except for money market accounts, the standard investment period shall be one to five years. The Board has engaged FirstService Financial and Morgan Stanley to assist with investment guidance and recommendations. Did You Know that Chef Chris has recently hired two new chefs who have the training and experience to help elevate our food to the next level? In the past several months, Chef has received more and more requests for special foods and preparation, and he has listened! Some of these requests, such as meals for celiac disorder, involve specialty pans and products and these are available for our chefs to use to meet your needs. This is something that Chef can do in this private restaurant that most of the public chains cannot provide. Many of the repeated requests are for small plates and healthy options like vegetarian, gluten-free and Mediterranean fare. Currently, Chef is working on a new menu for the upcoming renovation and these requests are being incorporated into that menu. Watch for the Sun Lakes Renovation Menu to be introduced towards the beginning of March. Chef is adamant about giving you the best restaurant experience possible. If something isn't right, give him the respect of letting him know so he may address it. If he doesn't know, he can't fix it. If you need gluten-free, vegan, or any other special dietary dish, just ask your server when you arrive for the options available to you. Congratulations to Evelyn Hawkins and Michele Walters on being recognized as 2023 Volunteers of the Year!
