8 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | MARCH 2024 | Library Committee Let's have some fun this month! I've assigned each letter in MARCH to something relevant to our Four Seasons Library: M is for Magazines. They are a popular item with many of the residents. Some people stopped subscribing to magazines because of cost and ease of getting the latest news and useful information electronically. Other folks, however, still receive and enjoy reading magazines. A is for Articles. Many of us remember lounging in a comfy chair reading magazine articles. Subjects range from holiday decorating and seasonal treats to detailed accounts of important people and happenings in the world. Name a subject; there's probably an article about it. R is for Residents. Luckily, some Four Seasons residents generously donate their magazines to the library for others to Read (another R word). The Library Committee sincerely thanks the residents who share their magazines with the larger community. C is for Current. We can accept only the most current issues of magazines because of the limited space on our lone magazine rack. We display the most recent three months of monthly publications and the current month for weekly issues. H is for Handy and Helpful. There is a great deal of knowledge and experience packed into most magazines. You pick and choose what you want to read. Also, a magazine can travel with you to be read and enjoyed whenever and wherever you go. Here's some more fun: What do these words have in common? Time, Cosmopolitan, Army Aviation, Southern Living, People, Zoo News, and National Geographic… they are names of a few of the magazines that have been donated to the Four Seasons Library. Sometimes the number of magazines is sparse; see this month's picture with many empty spaces on the rack. Other times, the magazine rack is stuffed full. The only way you'll know is to come in and check for yourself. Here are some reminders about other library materials: Hardcover fiction date ranges are 2015 to the present. Small and large paperbacks have been integrated so you can check them all at once; 2020 paperbacks have been removed and donated elsewhere. Look behind the closed doors under the paperbacks for more books; labels identify the contents. Puzzles have increased, while resident authors' books now have special labels and are filed with the regular books. That's all for now. Visit the library soon! ~ Betty Crase Casino Night - Do you feel lucky? Here is your chance! Hey high rollers! On Sat., April 20, Four Seasons will have Casino Night. All your favorite play with professional dealers and gaming tables (Craps, Roulette, Poker, and Blackjack) along with DJ assisted music for your dancing pleasure. Raffle prizes will be awarded at the end of the evening. It will be a fun evening of games, music and dancing for residents and their guests. BYOR (must be 21 and older). Tickets are $25 per person and advanced ticket sales commence on March 6. Games start at 6 pm and end at 9:30 pm. For those big winners, additional chips can be purchased throughout the evening in $100 increments for $5 USD. Tribute Band Concert - Back during the fall concert, a survey was taken of residents to name their choice of a tribute band. The top 10 on the survey included the Eagles, Beatles, Queen Nation, Fleetwood Mac, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Journey, The BeeGees, and Foreigner. The Social Committee is working on getting you a Tribute Band Concert in May. Good choices. Stay tuned. Spring Happens - March brings us many excuses to celebrate. It is Daylight Saving Time and the first sign of spring. This year Easter is in March. Oh, less we forget, the Ides of March, Albert Einstein's Birthday (March 14), and Procrastination Week (sometime or so, the first two weeks of March, or when you feel up to it). March is also Irish-American Month and the greatest excuse to party by celebrating St. Patrick's Day. All Irish, directly connected, distally related, and non- relations have a reason to gather and celebrate. It has been a month-long drought since the Super Bowl and a well-deserved party awaits. The luck of the Irish and the rascal Leprechauns mark the folklore of this day. But did you know directly across the earth is the Pacific Islanders' version of the Leprechaun, the Menehunes? Growing up in Hawaii, my older cousins often teased me about the Menehunes. I got my first inkling of these little people when I was shown a volcanic rock wall. My cousins said it was the work of the Menehunes, and since I was a little guy with a pudgy belly, I guess I look like one of them. I was deathly afraid that they were going to take me away. It didn't happen but I always recognize the myths that contribute to the folklore of the islands. Later on in life, I created Menehune Day. Menehune Day falls sometime around St. Patrick's Day. So, who's to say that Menehunes aren't the distant cousins of the Leprechauns? Each year we celebrate Menehune Day, and guess what is the entrée of the day… corned beef and cabbage. Happy spring! Coming soon - (March 6, 13, 20, 27) Wednesday Bingo Nights, (March 2) First Friday TGIF - Karaoke, (March 6, 8 am) Ticket Sales for Casino Night, (March 10) Brunch at the Bistro, (March 27) Open Session Board Meeting.
