The Cinema Club has screenings on the second Sunday of each month. We screen films you won't find at the big cineplexes: documentaries, indie films, foreign films, and other little gems that don't get wide release. Please note: the screening for this month is the fourth Sunday, not the second Sunday. Our screening for this month, on Sunday, March 24 at 6 pm, is Filmmakers for the Prosecution (France 2021, 59 min., French with English subtitles). Here is a brief description from IMDb.com: "In the summer of 1945, the American authorities instructed two young soldiers, Budd and Stuart Schulberg, to gather visual evidence attesting to Nazi crimes, with a view to the trial against twenty-four dignitaries of the Third Reich which was preparing for Nuremberg. The sons of an eminent producer, already experienced in the cinema business, they must (under the aegis of filmmaker John Ford, head of the Office of Strategic Services, OSS) support the accusation of chief prosecutor Robert Jackson. In four months of high-risk investigation across devastated Europe, the Schulbergs manage to save hundreds of hours of footage, much of it taken by the Nazis, from destruction. Their editing team then worked tirelessly to complete, before the opening of the trial on Nov. 21, 1945, films exposing the atrocities perpetrated after Hitler's seizure of power, from the first pogroms to the concentration camp system, and their premeditated nature." All of our screenings are followed by lively discussion about the film; we'd love to have you join us. The Lodge Theater has very limited seating, so if you're interested in our screenings, come early; we hope to see you there. Please note that all films announced are subject to availability. All Quiet On e Western Front was the first film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director. It was ranked the seventh best American epic film along being the first best picture to win based on a novel. The story is told entirely through the experiences of the young German recruits and highlights the tragedy of war through the eyes of individuals. The film follows a group of German schoolboys who were talked into enlisting at the beginning of World War I by their jingoistic teacher.
