| THE COLONY NEWS | MARCH 2024 | 27 Colony Chorus By Ken Luekens The Chorus sends a warm welcome to our new members. It's great that you've joined our "family." If there is anyone else who is interested in singing in our Spring Concert in April, it is not too late to join us. Just show up in the Auditorium on Thursday mornings at 9 am. Everyone who would like to sing is welcome. There are no auditions. In particular, the chorus needs male voices — tenors, baritones, and basses — and that includes women whose voices are pitched in the male vocal range. Come and join the singing. We are excited about our upcoming Beatlemania concert, which will include a live band. For a long time, we have had live piano and drums, and sometimes a harp, flute, violin or trumpet. This time, because it is Beatles music, we are including a guitar and bass guitar. Many people enjoyed the cabaret style seating at our Saturday night Christmas concert, so for our performance on Saturday night, April 27, we will again have cabaret seating. This reduces the seats available, so be sure to get your tickets when they go on sale. As a bonus, though, with cabaret you can bring your own snacks and beverages. For the performance on Sunday, April 28, the seating will be the traditional stadium style. Would you like to show extra support for The Colony Chorus? Consider becoming a Chorus Patron. As a Patron, you'll enjoy the benefit of a reserved seat in the front rows. For details, get in touch with Dee March at 760-271-9002 or Julie Benningfield at 520-975- 0224. Tickets will go on sale Thursday, March 21, from any Chorus member. Tickets should be available in the HOA office starting Monday, March 25. The Chorus is looking forward to seeing you at the concerts! Taka Ritchie came out of her retirement to teach our January watercolor class and chose a landscape that everyone enjoyed painting. Thank you, Taka, from all of us! We have new people coming to class each month, and we urge any of you who want to try watercolor for the first time to come and join us. In February, we will be painting either a still life or negative painting of something floral. We hope to see all of you and any new beginners on Thursday, Feb. 29. We meet the last Thursday of each month in the Annex from 9 am to 12:30 pm. Watercolor Classes By Sylvia Maxwell, 818-667-1766 Phyllis Penn is the March Artist and has returned to share some of her beautiful paintings and photography for your pleasure. Phyllis was Juried into the Valley Watercolor Society as well as being a member of the San Fernando Valley Art Club. Her love of painting has included watercolors, acrylics and pencil. She paints abstracts, landscapes, and portraits of people and animals, and in fact may be best known in The Colony for her many portraits of our pets. In addition, she is a member of Photo 24, which is a photo stock company. Her photography has encouraged her to travel to many parts of the world, and her photos have appeared in travel brochures, calendars, and in magazine and TV advertisements. Like many of our artists, Phyllis participates in our annual Arts and Crafts Show in November. She has exhibited her artwork in our lobby for many years, and we wish to thank her for sharing her talent with all of us. Artist of the Month By Sylvia Maxwell, 818-667-1766 Our annual October show last fall was a great success, and we are now back at work to bring you more fun entertainment on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 12-13 with The Colony's Got Talent. There will be a little bit of this and a whole lotta that! — and all brought to you by the Players Theater Group. The Players have chosen very easy and funny scripts suited for those who do not wish to memorize a lot of lines, or if it is your first time and you just want to get your feet wet. We also work with those who may be first-timers to make sure they are welcomed to our group and comfortable. Auditions for the skits and for MC's will be on Monday, April 15, at 6 pm in the Auditorium. We are interested in a female and a male for our MC's this year.
