| THE COLONY NEWS | MARCH 2024 | 31 Our league is off to a great start going into February. Strikes Happen are in first place and right behind them by only 1 ½ games is Game On. Hot Shotz are in third place and Ten Pins is in fourth place, only eight games out of first place. We had a super fun dinner at Richie's Diner in January, nearly 34 of us attended. February's dinner in the Auditorium will be the Pasta Bar. Our two highest average bowlers were John Haller at 177 and Jerry Hanson at 171. Remember, even if you do not bowl any longer, you are welcome to join us for dinner. Please let me know if you would like to come so I can add you to the list. Dinner prices vary per venue. For any of you living with neuropathy, our fitness center has a piece of equipment that may help. Our Power Plate machine is capable of stimulating the nerves and bringing blood flow to the skin. Both of these aspects are essential in the quest to mitigate neuropathy symptoms. There is a large body of experience from neuropathy patients who have used whole body vibration, which is what our power plate provides, to improve both diabetic and chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy (PN). Diabetes is the most common type of neuropathy. It affects the feet and the legs, which results in numbness and the reduced ability to feel pain or temperature changes. By using our power plate on a regular basis, whole body vibration can stimulate the growth of blood vessels into muscle tissues that improve oxygen and the supply of nutrients to the affected areas. This helps reduce damage to the nerve endings found in the skin, muscles, joints, bones and the body's soft organs. Accordingly, improvements in balance and gait or muscle issues are common among people suffering with PN. While there is no established rule for using the power plate machine for whole body vibration to address PN, there are guidelines. For example, to maximize the increase in blood flow to lower extremities, power plate users are advised to do the following: • Stand on the plate with knees bent. • If capable, try to do isometric squats. • At least two minutes. • Ideally three times a week. If you are interested in learning more about this novel machine, or any other machine in the fitness center, please contact Cindy Irving, our HOA receptionist, at (951) 677-4341, to arrange a free appointment with me.
