32 | THE COLONY NEWS | MARCH 2024 | Jack & Jill By Dennis Murphy, 951-461-0457 Ladies Golf By Judy Lebovitz, 951-461-0065 As predicted, the rainy season has arrived and we are playing when we can. However, as I write this, the course is pretty well flooded and if we do play, it's probably cart paths only and that's difficult for some of us. At our February luncheon, our Back Niner Chair presented awards for most improved, most games played, and most chip-ins/birdies. Bea Brown was the recipient of Most Improved for the back nine group. Our 18-hole tournament chair announced the Aces of the Month for January were Barbara Keen (high handicap) and Anita Hoetker (low handicap). Congratulations to all the ladies. Both groups have different events each week and fun tournaments. We have a great group of ladies, and our monthly lunch meetings are always informative and enjoyable. If you would like to learn more about our club, please contact either Peggy Clendenen, at 951-696- 2169, Vicky Cornille at 270-366-2219, or me for more information. We hope you'll consider joining us! The tournament for our Jack and Jill Season Opener had an interesting launch. We started our season with the "Regular Scramble" format for competition, with 43 golfers of 10.75 teams of foursomes chasing a first-place position. Once we finally got our roster of active players aligned and table seats had been reserved for the banquet attendees, we let the game begin. Mother Nature played an important role for our play, delivering an opening tee like none we have had in the past. Freezing temperatures had been the norm for 8 am tees for the past several days, but on this day we were met with an early morning pre-tee of light rain and high cumulus (the big, high ones) clouds that pegged the temperature at a balmy 51.° Nice. But as we headed to our tee positions and before we could strike the first ball, we went from a 1 to a 5 mph wind, which blew the clouds away and the temperature began plummeting to 37.° The skies were now clear and with the wind, the warm air dissipated and did not return until the tournament finished. Oh, what a day as we traversed the links. Though it was cold, it was a spirited event and a hotly contested one, and we enjoyed our usual camaraderie. The following posted winning positions for the contest. Winning Teams 1st 45.416 Terry Lundquist, Sue Jordan, John Hoetker and Pat Byron 2nd 48.412 Mike and Leigh Tsumura, Randy Meyer and Connie Vanderbyl 3rd 48.426 Joe Cwirka, Marge Anderson, Dennis Murphy and Barbara Keen 4th 49.419 Ron Brown, Judy Lebovitz, Rich and Bea Brown Closest to the Pin #5 Women, Paula Thompson – 21'0" / Men, Joe Cwirka – 12'9" #15 Women, Barbara Keen – 22'2" / Men, Terry Lundquist – 2'6" #16 Team #13 Bruce and Ann Hartwig and Billie Denney –10'6" The Darwin Award went unclaimed for our opening day extravaganza. It was suggested that a perpetual trophy be created and be presented to deserving candidate(s) each month and be on display at the table of winning party(ies). The ever-so-humble MC/CEO agreed to purchase such a statue of Charles DARWIN and control its existence before, during and after each Jack and Jill banquet. Overwhelming agreement was garnered from those in attendance. As suggested, it shall be done! Our next contest is set for Thursday, March 14, and will be our "Random Draw" event. The banquet will be in the Auditorium. As with all Jack and Jill events, you DO NOT have to be a member of either the Men's or Women's Golf Clubs to play. Just pick up your sticks and join us for the fun and friendly competition. See ya on the links! January Winners
